Above is a video created by @thepuzzlerepublic on how to play puzzle chess.
Puzzle Chess – How to Play
🧩 Players
-
Play 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2
-
Each team works together to complete the same puzzle
🧩 Puzzle
-
Use a jigsaw puzzle with 300 pieces or less
-
100–200 pieces works best
Setup
-
Turn all puzzle pieces face up.
-
Build the border together before the game starts.
-
Place a chess timer in a neutral spot and set it to 20 minutes.
(You can download a free Chess Clock app on your phone.) -
Flip a coin or a puzzle piece to decide who goes first.
Goal
Finish the puzzle with more time remaining on your clock than your opponent.
-
When the puzzle is finished, the team with the most time left wins 🏆
-
If your timer runs out before the other team, you lose.
Gameplay Rules
-
Teams take turns placing ONE piece at a time.
-
On your turn, you may only hold ONE loose puzzle piece at a time.
-
All loose pieces are available to both teams.
-
Once you place a piece, tap your timer to end your turn.
Movement Rules
-
Pieces can be placed anywhere inside the puzzle — there are no dedicated sides.
-
During your turn, you may move as many pieces as you want to help make connections.
-
However, you cannot leave any loose pieces inside the border.
Tie Breaker
If the puzzle is completed and both timers somehow show the exact same time…
Play again! 😄
