Speed Puzzling Guidelines

🧩 Before You Begin

Choose your puzzle orientation.

  • Do you prefer to puzzle right-side up or upside down?
  • Be consistent and choose the orientation that helps you recognize patterns the fastest.

1. Flip Every Piece

Turn all pieces face up as quickly as possible.

If you're puzzling as a pair:

  • One person continues flipping pieces.
  • The other person immediately begins pulling out edge pieces.

2. Build the Edge

Once the pieces are flipped, start assembling the border.

Don't worry if you can't finish it immediately—you can always come back to it later.

3. Sort First, Build Second

Sorting is your default strategy!

Group pieces by:

  • 🎨 Color
  • 🔷 Pattern
  • 🏠 Object or image
  • 🌤️ Background areas (sky, grass, water, etc.)

Place sorted groups near the area where they will likely belong in the finished puzzle.

Working as a Pair?

One puzzler can:

  • Build small "islands" (groups of 3–4 connected pieces)

The other puzzler can:

  • Place those completed islands into the growing puzzle.

4. Finish the Border

If you left part of the edge unfinished, return and complete it when it makes sense.

5. The 10-Second Rule

⏱️ If you're not making progress within 10 seconds... MOVE ON!

Don't spend too much time forcing pieces together.

Instead:

  • Try another color.
  • Switch to another pattern.
  • Build a different section.

You can always come back later.

The fastest puzzlers don't solve one section at a time—they keep making progress somewhere on the puzzle.

Speed Puzzling Success Tips

  • Keep your pieces spread out where you can see them.
  • Scan with your eyes before picking up pieces.
  • Build multiple sections at once.
  • Stay organized.
  • Keep moving—momentum is more important than perfection!
