If you’ve ever raced a friend to finish a puzzle or challenged yourself to “beat your best time,” then you’ve already taken your first steps into the world of speed jigsaw puzzling!

Speed jigsaw puzzling is a timed competition where individuals or teams race to complete a jigsaw puzzle as quickly as possible. It combines focus, teamwork, and strategy — and it’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting new hobbies in the puzzle community.

🕒 How It Works

In a typical speed puzzling event, all participants start at the same time with the exact same puzzle (often 500 or 1000 pieces). Every competitor or team works at their own table, and the clock runs until the puzzle is completely finished.

Events usually last 2 to 3 hours, depending on the type of competition and puzzle size. For example, a 500-piece solo event may finish in around an hour, while team relays or larger puzzles can take longer.

Speed puzzling comes in several formats to fit different skill levels and styles of play:

  • Solo Events – One person takes on the puzzle alone, testing their individual speed and strategy.

  • Pairs Events – Two people work together to complete the puzzle. Teamwork and communication are key!

  • Team Events – Usually teams of four, dividing sorting and assembly tasks to finish as quickly as possible.

  • Relay Events – Teams compete in stages, with each member (or group) completing a portion of the puzzle before the next teammate takes over. This format brings extra excitement and strategy to the competition.

Speed jigsaw puzzling has grown into a global sport, with events held at multiple levels:

  • State Championships – Larger regional events that attract top competitors from across each state.

  • National Championships – Annual events, such as the U.S. Speed Puzzling Nationals, which determine who moves on to international levels.

  • World Championships – The ultimate stage for speed puzzlers! Teams from around the globe compete for the title of World Jigsaw Puzzle Champion.
